Overview

Sushi Kawana, nestled in the heart of Melawai’s "Little Tokyo" district at Jl. Melawai 9 No.18, stands as a testament to authentic Japanese culinary tradition in South Jakarta. This intimate Japanese restaurant brings the essence of Japan through its simple yet refined atmosphere, combining a small sushi bar with private dining rooms that cater to both quiet individual diners and close-knit groups seeking an authentic experience.

The restaurant is best known for its fresh, high-quality sashimi and sushi selections, including highlights such as the silky Chawan Mushi, delicate Uni Sea Urchin, and perfectly seasoned Dashimaki Tamago. Their Omakase offers an insightful journey through seasonal fish and traditional preparations, favored by Japanese expats and connoisseurs who appreciate the absence of fusion distractions. Signature dishes like the Salmon Belly Sashimi and Sushi Moriawase Sakura showcase the skill of the chefs, balancing texture and flavor with precision.

The space invites calmness and focus, a quiet refuge in the bustling city. Many patrons remark on its serene ambiance, which often creates an almost meditative dining atmosphere, perfect for savoring every bite without interruption. The service is consistently attentive, aligning well with the ethos of meticulous Japanese hospitality.

However, the restaurant does experience occasional challenges related to food availability and group accommodations, as some guests have noted. While this may influence choices for larger celebrations, the regulars and solo diners find comfort in the steady quality and authenticity the place maintains.

For those drawn to classic Japanese staples, Zaru Soba and Sukiyaki provide comforting options beyond sushi and sashimi. The revered tempura, especially the tempura soba, is often cited as a personal favorite for its superb execution. Despite a somewhat limited and occasionally outdated menu, Sushi Kawana’s strength lies in its purity of technique and ingredient respect.

As a destination, Sushi Kawana appeals mostly to traditionalists and those seeking an immersive Japanese dining experience without modern embellishments. Its legacy as one of the oldest Japanese establishments in the area adds a layer of heritage to every visit, making it more than just a meal—it's a connection to an enduring culinary culture within Jakarta's Little Tokyo.

Actually wanted some okonomiyaki, but unfortunately the place is closed during this big holiday, so we decided to have some sashimi. This is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants around the area that known as the little Tokyo district. The place is small with some bar sittings area and some private dining rooms. We order some sashimi, chawan mushi and tempura set. Service was really good and attentive, iur sashimi taste great and fresh but in a smaller size, the tempura was also good but nothing special. Price comparison to food quality is on the down side. To expensive.

Very nice sushi restaurant I have been to. The sushi and sashimi are very good. Very friendly staff. It’s also very quiet and serene there, and it is also pretty relaxing. Perfect to meditate! Well, pretty expensive too, but you can come to this place since it’s nice!

An authentic hidden gem in Melawai’s Little Tokyo. Frequented by Japanese expats, it offers a traditional sushi bar experience without the fusion gimmicks. The fish quality is superb, and the Omakase is excellent value. Quiet, simple, and delicious.

I usually love this place a lot and only have nice things to say about their food. I have been here many times for different type of food including "omakase" but last night was a bit disappointing when I had 2 different group in the same place for dinner! The food availability was bad and the service level was less than expected where we were actually there for birthday celebration. To be fair to them, we enjoyed whatever food that they have served especially their fresh Hokkaido Oyster, Unagi roll and love their daikon appetizer. With this experience, shall have to reconsider for group celebration and bringing first time guests. Would just go back just with the regulars to ensure no bad experience.

I decided to try this place from a friend's recent recommendation. She mentioned that it was very good but the price is expensive. So I went there at lunch (Japanese restaurant usually provide better value set on lunchtime only) and ordered the Kaisen Don Set The set include a sashimi don, salad, a few small chicken katsu, miso soup, chawan mushi, and ended with ice cream desert. Here's my review : - Sashimi don (5/5) It had several sashimi, eggs, pickles with real wasabi (not the usual fake wasabi we have been used to). It was the first time I ate sushi/sashimi with a real wasabi and I'm very surprised that it's very mild in comparison with the usual wasabi. The sashimi include shrimp, minced tuna, salmon, mackerel, mekajiki, unagi (cooked), ikura. Every single piece is very fresh and tasty, with no tainting fishiness at all. I loved it. The pickles are refreshing and there's kombu pickle that had strong umaminess, the bowl was a delight. - Chicken katsu pieces (3.5/5) It's a bit thin but it smell and taste good - Miso Soup (5/5) It's not watery, instead it's thicker than usual miso soup, and it taste fantastic. It had several small pieces of salmon chunk and they are so soft, it's perfect. The salmon may still have bone on it so pay attention. Overall this may probably be the best miso soup I've ever tasted - Salad (3/5) This may be the weakest link in the menu. The vegetable are quite fresh and topped with simple mayonnaise. Not that it's bad, but other japanese restaurant have more complex and appetizing sauces like sesame dressing or something others. It's still OK, just not on par with the other items - Chawan Mushi (5/5) Soft as silk, and it had several bits and pieces of ingredients inseide. I can taste a few pieces of salmon, mushroom, green peas, and there are others I can't tell what it was, but I can tell each ingredient is top quality, even the peas are so sweet! - Ice cream (4/5) Vanilla ice cream topped with berry sauce, it's a nice desert to end the meal The ocha also tasted great and fragrant, everything is of top or decent quality. And the portion is quite plenty too. The price was indeed expensive, or at least above average than nearby japanese restaurants, but I think it's worth to treat yourselves sometimes a great meal with serious quality. I'm very satisfied for the amazing meal, thank you Sushi Kawana!

The sushi portions are very generous. The prices are reasonable that the chef is this old Japanese chef from Japan. Very focused on making a sushi.he presents to Sushi and a very amazing interesting beautiful way that is too nice sometimes that you feel like you shouldn’t be eating it.

My favorite Japanese restaurant in Blok M Kaisendon set (at lunch time) is signature and best good toppings are various and very fresh all. Even wasabi is specially different. Udon soup is deep katsuo flavor and add kitsune (skin tofu) is better. Zaru soba texture is real itself. Tempur is normal comparing to other specials. Strong recommend if want top authentic Japanese style
